Mitsubishi Electric’s carbon neutrality activities

As per UNCTAD data, consumers worldwide use 29% of global energy and are responsible for 21% of the world’s CO2 emissions, hence they can play a big role in the efforts to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy. According to the latest Eurobarometer survey by the European Commission, in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, Europeans remain very concerned about climate change and support action across the EU to tackle it.

These facts support the well-known thesis that individuals are increasingly aware of the importance of the carbon neutral approach. They are also very well aware of the fact that their choices as consumers can influence a manufacturers’ strategy in terms of sustainable production process.

  • Consumers feel empowered to make sustainable shopping choices, and realize they can make the difference in a manufacturers’ approach towards their production process.
  • Two years after the First Insight’s report on Generation Z and sustainability was released, Gen X consumers’ preference to shop for sustainable brands increased by nearly 25% and their willingness to pay more for sustainable products increased by 42%.
  • Consumers across all generations – from Baby Boomers to Gen Z – are now willing to spend more on sustainable products.
  • Consumers realize they can demand sustainable production processes, products and shopping formats from manufacturers.
  • Manufacturers realize that they need to be carbon neutral to stay competitive and remain the consumer’s first choice in their product category.

In 2021, Mitsubishi Electric was designated a “Supplier engagement leader”, which is the highest ranking in the CDP Supplier Engagement program operated by CDP, an international non-governmental organization that supports environmental disclosure.

This is the fifth year that Mitsubishi Electric has earned a top ranking for excellent work and strategies for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and climate-change risk throughout its supply chain.

Our enviromental commitment 

Mitsubishi Electric’s environmental initiatives reflect the company’s Environmental Sustainability Vision 2050 policy, which declares that the company will “protect the air, land, and water with our hearts and technologies to sustain a better future for all”.

The policy is designed to reduce environmental impact in terms of global value chains, energy-saving products and systems, and cutting-edge infrastructure, ultimately to realize decarbonisation and a more sustainable global environment.

Climate-change initiatives of Mitsubishi Electric:

  • Reduction of greenhouse gases throughout the company’s value chains, from the development, design and procurement of raw materials and production through sales, distribution, use and disposal, aiming at net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
  • Provision of more sophisticated operational systems for distributed power sources and storage batteries, further grid stabilization, and high-capacity, high-efficiency renewable energy power transmission for expanded adoption of renewable energy in society.
  • Reduction of emissions in production by introducing high-efficiency and IoT equipment, increasing the rate of the adoption of renewable energy, and upgrading equipment operation as well as developing energy-saving models.
